It seems like every magazine or website publishes a list of the best places to retire. Sometimes it even seems that there is a competition for who can put out the whackiest best places to retire lists – brainiest places to retire, best outdoor places, etc.

The lists are generally helpful for these reasons:

  • They bring places and towns to your attention that you might not have heard of before
  • They inspire some communities to do a better job of making themselves attractive to retirees
  • They help people compare and contrast different retirement cities, without having to leave home

Some of the drawbacks associated with best places to retire lists are:

  • Many of the lists are nearly all the same with the same communities getting reviewed over and over again
  • Prices often go up and places get overrun as retirees flock to the popular spots
  • Lots of good retirement places are overlooked because too many retirees rely slavishly on the narrow range of towns on the popular lists.
